About PaperRelief Sculptures

This unique and specialised paper art form has evolved from traditional paper casting techniques, but with one clear difference: I use a single, newly formed sheet of 100% cotton paper and gently shape it by hand into a sculptured bas-relief.

I begin by hand-sculpting the original bas-relief form. I then use a variety of methods, including plaster moulds, to carefully shape a newly formed sheet of wet cotton paper into the relief, allowing it to dry naturally and hold its final form.

After many years of developing and fine-tuning this process and not finding a widely recognised name for this exact method, I call these works "PaperRelief Sculptures". The name reflects the nature of the art: a sculptural bas-relief created from a single, hand-formed sheet of cotton paper.

There is a subtle symbolism in this art form that I find deeply meaningful. Drawing from centuries-old papermaking traditions and brought to life through hand-formed relief, each PaperRelief sculpture shows how simple cotton paper can become a work of art with texture, depth and personal meaning.

I’ve also developed a method for personalizing each artwork, where inscriptions are added while the paper is still drying. This allows the words to become embedded into the actual paper structure, giving the artwork deeper personal significance and creating a truly unique art gift to celebrate a special occasion, relationship or personal story.
